RIC given before the planned ischemic event results in metabolic protection against damage caused by, or during the interventional procedure. These procedures could be coronary interventions (stents, balloons), or cardiac surgery.

Applying the RIC stimulus during an unplanned ischemic event, but before reperfusion, also results in protection against IRI damage. Such ischemic events could be a heart attack or stroke.
